Change the format of video file so i can burn it?

how do i do this??? i mean i have so many movies on my computer that id like to burn to a disc... but if i burn them like they are right now they will only play in computer... not in dvd players and such... ihave a macbook pro if that makes any kind of difference... please help... thank you... i hope this is possible to do...Change the format of video file so i can burn it?
