How do I know the format of a video and how to change it?

I want to make a video shot from my digital camera brighter so I dowloaded Windows Movie Maker and for some reason when I try to import my video it doesn't show it so I'm thinking it's not in the correct format. How do I check what format it is in and how do I change it? PLEASE HELP ME!!! Thanks!How do I know the format of a video and how to change it?
Right click on your video%26gt; select properties%26gt; under the %26quot;summary%26quot; tab, look down to the video, and it will tell you the Codec and all. Windows Movie Maker isn't the best thing ever because it compresses the file SO small, that it loses a bunch of digital quality. :( But it's good for normal home videos. Only .avi files will work in Windows Movie Maker because Microsoft is being stubborn.How do I know the format of a video and how to change it?
