How can i convert an avi FILE into a mp4 video on mac?

i was trying to convert an avi file into mp4 video format because when i tried to open the avi file, an error showed saying that it could not be opened because the file was not a movie for some reason. i tried media-convert.com, and it got the video to work, but for some reason, the size of the video changed from 96mb to 73, and it got really slow and choppy...



can anyone give me step-by-step instructions on how to do this right with free software?
