How do I change my video formats?

I want to use my Adobe After Effects program to edit some home movies I have on my hard drive. However, the movies won't load into the adobe program. They are AVI files, I believe and the %26quot;tech%26quot; icon next to the original file on the harddrive has a %26quot;THM%26quot; extension. Can someone please help me get these movies onto the Adobe program. I've tried over 12 different converters and none of them are working. Is it the way I load the movies from the device onto the hard drive? Is it something I have to %26quot;rename%26quot;? What do I do???How do I change my video formats?
